December 2, 1881

Alpine Presbyterian Church was begun by seventeen individuals at the Tryon School on what was said to be a cold day, December 2, 1881. Our present-day church is still located on that same property. The best evidence we have today of the thoughts of the founders of Alpine are the following words recorded in the minutes of the Session by its clerk, Curtis Mackey: “The heartfelt desire was expressed that this church should be honored by the Lord in being the instrument in his hand of turning many souls from darkness to light, and as her years increase, her good works shall multiply.”
